Kiran waited till dark before she left camp. Orders stood that no one was to be out of camp after the sun went down. She was not one to always follow orders. Slipping past the guards and watch was easy and she welcomed the dark night. Somehow she survived each night and it only encouraged her. The Queen had spies sent to the Roman camp, but Kiran was distrustful of the news. Some of her sisters were less inclined to suicide missions.
It was nearly a fortnight ago when she had ran across two Roman soldiers. She didn't know why they were so close to the camp and she had not time to ask. They recognized her almost as soon as she had spotted them. The chase was to her advantage but she doubted they had little chance to question it as she disappeared into the undergrowth. For men they were not the brightest, letting the other out of sight and then to become hopelessly separated. Unlike the strangers she knew the land like the back of her hand.
The choice was hard but she followed the man who seemed a smaller. She had lost sight of him for only a moment or two before she rediscovered him behind her, arms wrapped around her squeezing the breath from her. Her save had been the dagger she still held. She jammed it close to his groin, not close enough to do damage but at least he let her go. As he screamed, she tired catching her breath and crawl out of reach. In the not to distance she could hear his companion trying to get to him. Choosing her life over rape and death she made it a point to run.
Her news had brought a sharp reality to the tribe. disobedience had paid off that time. The Queen had ordered out search parties in the morning and the scouts reported a larger army. One thing that had kept the amazon nation alive so long was the ability to simply disappear back into oblivion, but so were they known for standing their ground. Kiran had no problem with standing ground, but she wanted to be sure of what she was standing against.
Thats what lead her out of camp each night. For the last fortnight she had learned nothing new nor had seen so much as a twig out of place. Returning to camp near midnight she stopped suddenly noticing the silence. She was the night, she could move through it without stirring up the night life. The sudden change in the night made her suspicious. Maybe had she not encountered the Romans, two weeks ago, she would not have thought anything about it.
As was she was suspicious, knowing in her experience amazonian night life was different in the presence of strangers. Maybe it was the smell of their amour or just the lack of respect they seemed to show the land. Her sisters would call her crazy for such thoughts but she was confident in her conviction. Taking her time she searched the immediate area, in the dark she was unlikely to follow any signs. Giving up the half ass search she started back to camp.
Letting her thoughts drift from spies to the inevitable battle she caught nearly completely off guard and nearly in the open when she realized something in the shadows were not right. Her sudden retreat was clumsy, trying to put some space between the man and herself. She did not go far but retreated behind a tree, somewhere she could have a view of where he might move as well. Her encounter with the other soldiers was still fresh in her mind. As was the knowledge she was lucky they had not had a chance to rape or kill her. She was not looking to push her luck.
After her heart came out of her throat she felt some of her confidence return. Her voice reflected none of the fear, only the confidence of being so close to home. She knew her tone would change if he had his sword at her throat but it might be said she thrived on the edge and danger. Kiran did not speak loud enough that any of the guards would hear her, but she thought he might. "Are you lost? I think you are a little way from home, Roman... Maybe I can show you to a new home...."
